Foreword

Investment, Innovation and Venture Capital

During a time of economic transformation, innovation is extremely important for it creates new business opportunities, fosters growth and identifies the jobs of the future.

Businesses need to move up the value chain to take advantage of new opportunities domestically and internationally, particularly in the Asian region. This means lifting their capabilities, expanding their horizons and investing in innovation.

Access to patient, high-risk capital, especially at the pre-seed and seed stage to support start-ups is critical to the commercialisation of new ideas with market potential.

Innovation Australia has assisted successive Australian Governments with mechanisms to embrace innovation and recognise the importance of industry research and development to future growth and to the wellbeing of all Australians.

During the past 14 years Innovation Australia and its expert Venture Capital Committee have supported venture capital managers taking Australian ideas to market.

Innovation Australia has advised AusIndustry on more than $500 million of government capital to be co-invested alongside private sector capital to assist in the translation of Australian ideas into innovative products, processes and services and the growth of new competitive companies.

The innovative company case studies and venture capital fund manager profiles in Investment, Innovation and Venture Capital cover a wide range of technologies that demonstrate Australia’s strong science and research base and the commercial opportunities that flow from years of investment.

People with ideas and investors with commitment in partnership with government programs can make a real difference.
